Exercise1

Exercise 1 allowed us to see the CSS - cascading style sheet for a template that was created for exercise 1. When looking at the CSS you can see how containers are made and closed so that create a invisible grid to put text and images in. To demonstrate how different images come together we had to change the colours, textures and appearance of the different images which when used together create a menu template.

We learnt how to save images as png-8 files which allow the image to have a small size but remain high quality and can have the ability to have transparity on websites.

After changing the images and resaving them we were showed how to change things in the CSS using code. I found this easy which seemed strange because the last time i used Dreamwever i found the code area hard. I found changing the background font was easy and straight forward enough, all i had to do was find the colour code in Photoshop for the colour i wanted to use. Learning this i realised i could change the font size and style as well.

This was my end result

Dreamweaver

I have used Dreamweaver a few times but i have never used it in the way we were taught in class, which i found easier and faster. First we created our own sites using a step by step instructions we were given. I found it interesting that everyone in class had a FTP - File Transfer Protocol and that we could all connect to our sites via our home computers if we had Dreamweaver.

Week2

Second week in web class we learnt the CRAP principle of assessing websites. CRAP stands for

Contrast

Repetition

Alignment

Proximity

If a website fulfils these requirements it will be considered a good website. Now that we were given a criteria of how to assess a website we had to find 3 new good sites.

My best example of a good site using the CRAP principle is the Adidas site. The site uses a college that darkens when you select from the main menu to help make a strong contrast between the white background with black text and the darken images as shown in my screen shot.

Adidas site uses repetition of the menu bar at the top of each site and when you click on an image a small amount of information is displayed. Then when you go into different areas of the site the images continue through.

Most of the Adidas site is left aligned all the text is place to the left unless the image appears on the left then in which case the texts becomes right aligned.

The site uses proximity by always placing the logo in the top left corner. Also when you click on an image and expands all the others make room and keep their same proportions.

Week 1

First week of web class we drew pictures and words that we felt described ourselves and learnt about other students. In the first exercise we had a piece of paper that had four squares and we had to put a colour in one box, a shape in another square, an object the 3rd box and a word in the last box. i drew the colour blue with my metallic pens because blue is my favourite colour. The shape i drew was a circle for me it represents love, there is no beginning and no end. For the shape i drew a soccer ball because i enjoy playing soccer and the word i chose to write was "Malae". This word in timorese means "white tourist" or "white people" and it was my nick name when i went to Timor and Bali.

For homework we had to find 3 good and 3 bad websites.

My 3 good sites i found were, Ebay, NT News and White Pages.
For me a good site is something i can navigate easily around and the information is all relevant.

The 3 bad sites were destructoid, Evil Tattoo and Charles Darwin University. What i consider a bad website is one that involves going in circles through the navigation and the pages are cluttered long.
